YOU could consider our round-up of the best dresses of 2011 to be a game of two halves - there are the designs that inspired thousands of column inches and then the simply exquisite gowns.

For the former, it was all about the two Kates - Moss and formerly Middleton - and their much-anticipated wedding dresses, both of which won nothing but praise from waiting critics who were quick to deem both perfect for their respective brides.

Beyoncé also falls into the first category for announcing her pregnancy via an asymmetric Lanvin gown as she walked the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards, cradling her previously undisclosed bump as she greeted the waiting cameras.

In the latter category, we were spoilt for choice thanks to this season's crop of big awards shows - Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman at the Globes, Michelle Williams at the Oscars - plus the Costume Institute Gala, fashion's biggest red carpet event of the year, which in 2011 honoured the career of Alexander McQueen and spawned a host of candidates in the designer's breathtaking designs.
