BridalWear Biography
In ancient Rome, brides wore a white tunic. At medieval weddings, the well-to-do wore gowns in rich hues. In the U.S. today, bridalwear sales total more than $2 billion annually. Over the years, the wedding dress has been a reflection of society and culture—as well as a symbol of love and commitment. "The Wedding Dress" (V&A Publishing) looks at 300 years of bridal fashion, drawing on the extensive collection at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Here are some images.

Hemlines have varied over time. They rose up to the knee in the 1920s. Midcalf lengths found a following in the '50s.
